RE: Fall/SpringDriver Education Information

Date: August 11, 2020

You are receiving this letter to inform you of the driver education dates for this year at Inman Jr/Sr High. We will offer two sessions: Fall/September start date and Spring/January start date.  The fall session is mainly for students in grades 9-12 and spring for students in grades 8-12.

There are always several questions regarding obtaining a driver license for your teenager.  Here is some information on the Graduated Driver License Requirements for Teen Drivers in Kansas.  It should answer some questions you may have.

Any student who is at least 14 years of age is eligible to take Driver Education.  I will start a class on September 30 and January 14. The classes will have a limit of 15 students.  Freshmen and older who have had their instruction permit for 6 months will have first choice at this class in September.   Another class will begin in late January and will be open to any student who is at least 14 years old.

If your child does not have an instruction permit and he or she is 14 years of age, I would suggest they go to the DMV to take the test and get the instruction permit.  One does not need an instruction permit to take Driver Ed, but students must have an instruction permit for a full year and pass Driver Ed to be issued a restricted license. If the student does not have an instruction permit, I will give them a form after they complete the book portion of the class, which they can then take to the DMV and get a permit.  Many students wait until this time, but they are that much farther behind in getting their restricted license.

The written part of the class will be a 6 weeks class.  There are 18 chapter tests that students must pass with an 80% or better.  The test can be taken as many times as necessary to get that 80% or better.  All chapter tests are online and the student can take them any time any place that they have access to wifi. The Kansas Driver Handbook and final test will be a hard copy and the student has three chances to pass the test with an 80%.

The driving portion of the class will consist of general driving, maneuvers, and safety procedures. Driving will be done in the morning before school, after the school day, or if necessary during the summer. Your child will receive a curriculum guide which will list everything that needs to be completed.

The student will be scheduled to drive for one week.  If more driving time is necessary, it will be scheduled.

Students must pass both the written and driving portions of the class to receive a completion form and be eligible for a restricted license.

The fee for Driver Education at Inman Jr/Sr High School is $230.00 and must be paid before the student begins the class.
